Named after a song by The Softies, Spanish trio Me and the Bees are indie-pop aficionados; raised on a diet of charming 60’s girl-pop and seminal 90’s indie rock greats, they’ve expertly translated their fascination into remarkable songwriting with an ear for melody.
The record’s title distills astutely what Me and the Bees new music is about: living a life full of goodness, and making others feel good too. Brimming with optimism, their songs, which often concern the magic of the everyday, have an infectious quality; it’s music which cannot help but make you feel uplifted.
For Menos mal, the band’s third LP, Esther Margarit (bass, vocals), Verónica Alonso (drums, vocals) and Carlos Leoz (guitar, vocals), enlisted regular collaborator Guille Caballero (Els Surfing Sirles, Joan Colomo) to join on keys. Esther, Carlos and Verónica interchange vocal roles, a technique which produces a heavenly sound. Taking influence from The Supremes to Smokey Robinson, The Beach Boys to The Byrds, Pavement to Guided By Voices, Menos mal is a filler-free album where any song would make a worthy single. Just pick a random tune and you have a winner: the danceable solo of True Bypass, the chorus turned stand-alone song in 21, 32, 45, 69, the tremendous ending of I'm On Fire or the wonderful, naïve tenderness of If You. On the glorious single Spinnin', Inés Martínez de Albornoz (Las Perras del Infierno, La Célula Durmiente) lends a hand with flawless backing vocals.
Me and the Bees’ Menos mal was recorded at Cal Pau Recordings studio, Sant Pere Molanta, in December 2015 with Joan Colomo and Mau Boada. It was mixed and produced by Joan Colomo and mastered by Victor Garcia.
Originally a duo, the band first garnered media attention in 2008 when they uploaded two videos onto MySpace. Nueva Vulcano’s Artur Estrada convinced them to play a showcase, which lead to the band signing to La Castanya. Me and the Bees went on to release debut album Fuerza Bien (La Castanya 2010) and sophomore Mundo Fatal (La Castanya 2014) to much critical acclaim.
