Ted Leo is an American human being made from the inspirational parts of Billy Bragg, The Jam, The Pogues and the english new wave. These extremities are united in a trunk with hardcore background and a heart of oak with a tendency to mod revival, a strong Celtic epidermis, punk rocker enthusiasm and much hurry. Leo continues to be the hanging bridge between the spirit of 1979 powerpop and modism and the self-sufficiency and political rage of 80's hardcore.

Rebecca Gates has been in the world of music for twenty years now and is recognized for being The Spinanes singer and songwriter, one of the most unique bands of the nineties. Sub Pop released their three albums and they toured with bands like Fugazi and Stereolab. Throughout her career Gates has always been involved in music and art and has collaborated with musicians such as Elliott Smith, Laetitia Sadier or Willie Nelson and bands like The Decemberists and Joan Of Arc.

Ambos artistas estarán tocando en formato solo durante el mes de septiembre en España, Francia, Inglaterra, Alemania e Italy. Ted Leo es un humano americano hecho de las partes inspiracionales de Billy Bragg, The Jam, The Pogues y la nueva ola inglesa. Estas extremidades se unen en un tronco con parte de Citizens Arrest), y un corazón de roble con tendencia al mod revival, una recia epidermis celta, un entusiasmo punk rocker y unas prisas de aúpa. Ted Leo sigue siendo el puente colgante entre el espíritu 1979 del powerpop o el modismo y la autosuficiencia y rabia política del hardcore 80's.

Rebecca Gates empezó su andadura en la primera mitad de los años noventa al frente de The Spinanes. El grupo, una de las formaciones mas singulares de Sub Pop, editó sus tres discos en el mítico sello de Seattle y giró junto a grupos como Fugazi y Stereolab. Después de publicar un disco en solitario en 2001, titulado Ruby Series, Rebecca decidió reconducir sus intereses artísticos y durante diez años ha centrado sus esfuerzos en el mundo del arte: land art sonoro en Texas, editando un audiomagazine llamado The Relay Project y organizando exposiciones de sus propias obras artísticas dentro y fuera de los EEUU. Eso sí, Gates no ha dejado de componer música en ningún momento y durante este tiempo ha participado en discos de artistas como Elliott Smith, Laetitia Sadier, Willie Nelson, The Decemberists y Joan of Arc.

Obits de gira en octubre y nuevo 7" para La Castanya

El romance de Obits con La Castanya continúa. Después de visitar en varias ocasiones España —la más reciente en el festival Primavera Sound— y de dar la bienvenida en sus filas a un nuevo batería (nada menos que Alexis Fleisig, antes en Girls Against Boys y Soulside), el cuarteto de Nueva York vuelve en octubre para celebrar una gira de 9 fechas por el país junto al grupo Aliment, que viajarán con su LP Holy Slap recién editado.

Pero la cosa no acaba aquí, el motivo que los americanos vuelvan a la Península Ibérica es la edición y presentación de un nuevo 7” —será el cuarto de su carrera— por parte de La Castanya. La fecha de salida del 7” coincide con el primer concierto de la gira en Barcelona el 18 de octubre. Si en sus anteriores LPs —I Blame You (2009) y Moody Standard and Poor (2011), ambos editados en Sub Pop— eran un verdadero festín de sonidos rock, garage y surf , estas dos canciones, “Refund” y “Suez Canal”, no se alejan demasiado —¡afortunadamente!— de lo que los fans del grupo esperan de ellos. Dos composiciones que pueden sonar fieras o juguetonas en manos de un cuarteto que está de vuelta de todo y que exuda rock y honestidad por los cuatro costados.

Además, Rick Froberg nos presenta sus últimas ilustraciones en una exposición que tendrá lugar en el bar Heliogàbal de Barcelona durante todo el mes de octubre. Si todavía no sabes nada sobre el arte del cantante de Obits, mira su blog No es justo para enterarte de qué va la historia.

Confirmadas nueve fechas de la gira de Bart Davenport y Biscuit en diciembre

Bart Davenport y Biscuit interpretarán el Sound Affects de The Jam, dentro del ciclo We Used To Party

En diciembre volverá a la carga el ciclo We Used To Party, esa iniciativa creada por Houston Party en la que alguien versiona un gran disco que no es suyo. En las anteriores ediciones Giant Sand han hecho suyo al Johnny Cash de Live At San Quentin (inaugurando este proyecto en enero de 2010), The Posies el A Catholic Education de Teenage Fanclub, Clem Snide el Zuma de Neil Young y Chuck Prophet se ha metido en la piel de The Clash vía London Calling. En el caso que nos ocupa, Bart Davenport y Biscuit se atreverán con Sound Affects, el clásico de The Jam. Se trata de una gira organizada conjuntamente por Houston Party y La Castanya. Hagamos las presentaciones de sus protagonistas. Davenport es uno de los californianos que mejor simboliza en este siglo el espíritu de la West Coast de donde procede y del que se empapó desde bien pequeño, cuando a los 8 años aprendió a tocar la guitarra mientras devoraba la colección de vinilo de sus padres, unos hippies. Posee el encanto de otra época, una elegancia retro inherente, como si de la serie Mad Men pudiera hacerse una versión pop con Jonathan Richman en el papel principal. Tiene media docena de álbumes a su nombre, el último Searching For Bart Davenport (2011), además de los que ha publicado en proyectos paralelos, como Incarnations o Honeycut. Por su parte, Biscuit son barceloneses de Vilanova i la Geltrú, firmes candidatos a competir por el título de mejor banda de rock'n'roll española. Hay otros aspirantes, sí, pero ellos están ahí, sin duda. Nacieron en 1993 para dejar de ser tan garageros como la formación de donde venían, Blue Bus, y perseguir la melodía y el pop. Escuchándolos en su reciente referencia Memorabilia (de 2011, editado por La Castanya) nadie podrá decir que no lo han logrado. Y es que no solo tienen una buena colección de influencias (The Who, Redd Kross, The Byrds, MC5…y The Kinks, fans máximos), sino que saben transmitir todo eso con pasión y furia, a cubierto de las modas.

Como indicábamos al principio, ambos, Davenport y Biscuit, versionarán Sound Affects de The Jam, uno de esos discos por los que no pasa el tiempo. Si el grupo comandado por Paul Weller fue algo así como los Kinks de los 80, el citado álbum significó su… Revolver (lo sabemos, es de los Beatles). Un back to basics directo, solo abstracto en las letras, con psicodelia pero sin excesos, lleno de pop infeccioso, caso de That's Enterteinment y Man In The Corner Shop. La Castanya edita "Holy Slap" de Aliment en octubre / La Castanya releases "Holy Slap" by Aliment next october

El próximo 9 de octubre La Castanya edita Holy Slap, el primer LP —después de una maqueta y dos EPs— del trio de Girona Aliment. Ese mismo mes el grupo presentará el disco con una gira de diez fechas por toda la península —del 18 al 27 de octubre— tocando junto a los americanos Obits (Sub Pop / Nueva York). En breve anunciaremos todos los detalles de una gira que promete ser una fiesta.

Aliment se consolidan como una de las bandas más interesantes del panorama punk rock estatal con la colección de zurriagazos que es Holy Slap. Once canciones grabadas con los puños apretados y la frente sudorosa que los emparentan con bandas contemporáneas amigas de la melodía y el descontrol como Thee Oh Sees, Jay Reatard o Wavves y referentes más antiguos como Adolescents, Circle Jerks o incluso The Sonics. Once  viscerales composiciones que se acercan y se alejan de la luz alternativamente, te agitan el pelo como si fueras en un descapotable y que te ponen mariposas en el estómago. Canciones que hablan de mí y de ti, y de ellas. Ese estado mental que te envalentona y te hace pedir otro Gin Tonic más cuando casi no puedes decir tu nombre. Quizá dentro de veinte años pediremos una horchata; ahora queremos escuchar a Aliment.

Next october 9th La Castanya will release Holy Slap, the first LP —after a demo and two EPs— by the Girona trio Aliment. Aliment confirm themselves as one of the most interesting bands in the Spanish punk rock scene with the collection of mind blowing slaps-in-your-face that is Holy Slap. Eleven songs recorded with their fists firmly clenched and sweat in their foreheads that connect them directly with melody and frenzy friendly contemporary bands such as Thee Oh Sees, Jay Reatard or Wavves as well as more vintage influences such as Adolescents, Circle Jerks and even The Sonics. Eleven gut drenched tracks that alternatively come close to and run away from the light, shake your hair like you were speeding in a convertible and bring butterflies to your stomach. Songs that talk about you and me, and about them ladies. They put you in that state of mind that fills you with courage and makes you ask for another gin and tonic when you can hardly say your own name any more. Maybe in 20 years time we’ll drink sarsaparilla; right now we want to listen to Aliment.

We had to wait eleven years, since the release of Ruby Series in 2001, to hear the new compositions of catchy pop music and post-rock arrangements that can be found in The Float (La Castanya / Parcematone / 12UX, 2012). The album has been recorded throughout the United States and features exceptional musicians like Doug McCombs (Tortoise), John McEntire (Tortoise, The Sea and Cake), Nate Query (The Decemberists), Joanna Bolme (Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, Quasi), Thierry Amar (Godspeed You Black Emperor!, Silver Mt Zion), Rebecca Cole (Wild Flag), Gary Jarman (The Cribs), Joe Adamik (Califone) and Tim Rutili (Califone, Ugly Casanova) among others.

On stage, Rebecca surrounds herself with a unit called The Consortium, formed at different times by some of her best friends: Ji Tanzer (Blue Cranes), Joanna Bolme (The Jicks, Quasi), Rebecca Cole (Wild Flag), Nate Query (The Decemberists), Jenny Drizos (The Decemberists), Amy Domingues (Garland of Hours) or Dave Depper (Loch Lomond, Blue Giant).
